Salar Pools
In arid high-altitude landscapes, shallow saltwater pools form in isolated depressions where water has no outlet. Intense sunlight, extreme evaporation, and high mineral concentrations create an otherworldly environment, where water transforms into vibrant hues of red, pink, and orange.
These colors are produced by microscopic life—halophilic microorganisms and algae – that thrive in hypersaline conditions and develop pigments to protect themselves from ultraviolet radiation. As the water evaporates, intricate salt patterns, polygonal crusts, and crystalline textures emerge, creating striking natural abstractions.
