News Networks Can’t Match 2024

A year ago, the news cycle was beginning to fire on all cylinders as the 2024 presidential election was dealt a seismic jolt: Then-President Joe Biden announced he would be stepping down as his party’s presidential candidate, thrusting his vice president, Kamala Harris, into the spotlight. This same week in 2024 also saw the commencement of the Summer Olympic Games in Paris.

The absence of such major political and global news during the same week of 2025 resulted in all three evening newscasts recording no gains in total viewers and the Adults 25-54 demo.

For the week of July 21, ABC World News Tonight with David Muir was the only newscast to not see declines across the board, with its timeslot competitors from NBC News and CBS News registering week-to-week losses in both measured categories.

According to live-plus-same-day data from Nielsen, ABC World News Tonight averaged 7.272 million total viewers and 1 million Adults 25-54 demo viewers for the week of July 21. It remained flat in total viewers and saw a -4% fall in the demo compared to the previous week. Looking at its performance to the same week in 2024 (the week beginning July 22), WNT was down -4% in total viewers and -10% in the demo.

NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas finished as the No. 2 evening news broadcast in total viewers and the demo, averaging 5.487 million and 775,000 viewers, respectively. The broadcast, which just saw the departure of executive producer Meghan Rafferty to Versant, was down -2% in total viewers and -8% in the A25-54 demo. When comparing its performance to the same week a year ago, Nightly News had double-digit falls of -11% in total viewers and -18% in the demo.

CBS Evening News had 3.615 million total viewers and 495,000 viewers in the demo for the week of July 21. The broadcast was down -4% in total viewers and -1% in the demo compared to the week prior. Its year-ago week numbers also had double-digit falls of -18% in total viewers and -19% in the demo.
